Marlow: The Nature of the Narrator
Heart of Darkness written by Joseph Conrad is a complex novel fun of symbolism. Darkness is one of the largest symbols throughout the novel so large it is included in the title. The darkness of the Congo, the darkness of the , and the darkness of Mr. Kurtz. Marlow the narrator of the novel has a strong desire to travel up and down the Congo but as he travels from destination to destination, he discovers that the African shores are not what he had expected; the shores were dark and desolate. Mr. Kurtz also represents the symbol of darkness. Mr. Kurtz is the chief of the Inner Station of an exploration company that gathers ivory. He is sent to write about the "savage customs" but in regards, he becomes a part of the tribes himself...
