As a boy, I enjoyed playing soccer just for fun. I would go out to the park with my dad and scrimmage other neighborhood kids and adults. I would be able to keep up with the older kids and dominate the ones my age. After the games, I was always told that I should use my talent to play competitively, but in Nebraska, that was not likely. The idea of playing soccer at a high level in Nebraska was close to impossible. If you wanted to be on a competitive youth team, you had to play football. With the University of Nebraska winning national championships, coaches encouraged kids to stay in Nebraska to play football for the university. However, this was not appealing to me, I would never have the size for football and was content playing soccer in my backyard, at least until I moved to Albuquerque.
In Albuquerque, soccer was the main sport. All kids had played for a team at one time or another...
