Gabriel paced distractedly up and down the room, twirling his mustache between his thumb and forefinger. “I’m not as young as I used to be”, he could be heard muttering to himself. “Why, I’m almost 40.” He pulled a small lock of hair from his head and examined it. “Look. Salt and pepper already”, he said with a sigh as he continued to pace. With an abrupt shift in thought, he sat down at his writing desk. He hastily grabbed a piece of paper from the stack, and a quill to write with. “Well, Mme Baugnies gave me three names. She has excellent taste, and I’m sure they’re all lovely young ladies.” Here he paused. With a regretful air, he said to himself, “Although they could never be half as lovely as my Marianne...” Then he seemed to give himself a bit of a mental shake, and he resumed where he had left off. “Feuillet, Feydeau, or Fremiet.”, he said, as he quickly jotted the three names down. He ripped each name off the page of paper, rose, and briskly stepped over to the door.
