The culture that Luke has to deal with in the books of Luke and Acts is mainly Jews and
Gentiles. Luke also wants converts to minister to the Samaritans as well, even though
they are extremely hated by the Jews. Even though Luke never makes mention of the
Hellenists in Luke he talks about them in Acts. Since, these two books were written
around the same time, it is safe to assume that when the gospel of Luke was written the
Hellenists were around.
There has been a good deal of debate over what the mix of Jews to Gentiles was
in Luke's day. Scholars believe that it was mainly a Gentile community he was talking
to. Since, he seems to focus his explanations so as to help the Gentiles understand them
better. Some scholars think that it was an even mix of the two groups. There were also
different sects Luke had to deal with as well: Pharisees, Sadducces, and Essences. With
these vast groups of people with different religious view Luke had his work cut out for
him...
