The culture that Luke has to deal with in the books of Luke and Acts is mainly Jews and
Gentiles. Luke also wants converts to minister to the Samaritans as well, even though
they are extremely hated by the Jews. Even though Luke never makes mention of the
Hellenists in Luke he talks about them in Acts. Since, these two books were written
around the same time, it is safe to assume that when the gospel of Luke was written the
Hellenists were around.
There has been a good deal of debate over what the mix of Jews to Gentiles was
in Luke’s day. ... There were also
different sects Luke had to deal with as well: Pharisees, Sadducces, and Essences. With
these vast groups of people with different religious view Luke had his work cut out for
him. ... Luke instead is laying the foundation work of Jesus’
ministry for the Gentiles. This cannot exactly be proven but since scholars assume luke
was dealing mainly with Gentiles it is assumed. ... Luke has them being converted later.
Luke focuses more on the universalism of the Jews.
Luke also shows us how the cultural norms are being changed by Jesus. ... In Luke 5: 33-39 teachers
of the law ask Jesus about fasting saying, “ John’s disciples often fast and pray, and so do
the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours go on eating and drinking. ... Repentance becomes a dominant
theme throughout Luke.
