In his book The Causes of Delinquency, Travis Hirschi explains his control theory. This theory is in direct clash with Albert Cohen's theory of crime control. Certain crime prevention tactics can be traced to specifically combat the problems that Hirschi describes that cause crime.
Hirschi speaks about two elements in crime. The first is motivation to do the crime. The second is the control that prevents the person going forth and committing a crime. Usually, Sociologists focus on the first element, motivation. For example, Albert Cohen's Theory. While explaining delinquency in boys, Albert Cohen theorizes that boys in a gang share common problems such as age-- growing up, masculinity, and class, which act as motivation to do crimes. The working class boys cannot uphold the middle class values because they are not equipped to deal with the middle class culture...
