The "New" Woman
Women suffrage had been a long and very hard struggle of 1920. At this time, when women argued that they were equal to men and that they would be the first generation of women to have children, marriage, education, and a career.
Suffragists worked for state voting rights and later, for a federal women's suffrage amendment. The fight for suffrage had been a difficult one, and women came to believe that the struggle for women's rights and the recognition of women abilities were completed by the nineteenth amendment being passed.
Suffragists reached out to immigrants and working women in some cities. Some middle-class African American women were also included in the suffrage activities. However national leaders were quite aware of the "race question".
Before the amendments passed, other acts to help women were passed, like the Sheppard-Towner maternity Act, which provided funding to states for improved maternal and infant health care. The cable act also a breakthrough, helped American women who married foreign citizens, to retain their own U.S...
