Robert Reilly has been providing consulting engineering services to the industry for about 10 years now, and that includes 3 years in a large corporation. For the past 7 years, Reilly's firm Acme Engineering Company has been successful in carrying out large projects, and Reilly himself has acted as an agent for a number of reputed brand products. Recently, Reilly was offered an exclusive dealership of electronic and mechanical valves from one of the largest producers. Reilly functions as a sole proprietor and faces a dilemma whether to continue with his present line of products, or expand his business through this exclusive dealership offer.
Objectively, if Reilly chooses the former he will restrict the growth of his company due to recurring problems of shortage of capital and skilled labor. With his current line of products Reilly probably may not be able to grow as quickly as with the newer opportunity that lies ahead. Choosing the latter has its fair share of advantages; the main being, him reaping benefits of broadened market coverage. It would be most profitable and advantageous for Reilly to go ahead and invest in this new venture. On the flip side, starting a new venture often equates to raising capital to fund it.
