Racism A young African American male is driving down the expressway in his new SUV. He gets a little carried away and begins to speed. Soon he notices blue and red lights flashing in his rear-view mirror, he pulls over expecting a speeding ticket. The officer cautiously approaches the SUV and calls on his radio for backup. Now, there are two officers and they approach the car with their hands on their guns. The officers demand the young man to get out of the car and they begin to search the car, gutting it. They make a comment that he must be a drug dealer to have such a nice car and continue to search. After finding nothing, they leave the young man with a speeding ticket and trashed SUV, and drive off their separate ways. An unmotivated search like this is an example of racial profiling (Anderson 2). Even though it is illegal, and unlawful, racial profiling is a serious issue that occurs everyday in America. “Racial profiling is the practice of targeting individuals for police or security detention based on their race or ethnicity in the belief that certain minority groups are more likely to engage in unlawful behavior” (Neumann 37). So many people are victims of racial profiling without even realizing it. A journal entry by Bryonn Bain shows just how quick something can happen. I was pulled over on the Bruckner Expressway because of a broken taillight. The Police officer who ran my license claimed I had multiple warrants out for my arrest, and I was thrown in jail (Bain 1). This happened to Bryonn several times before he decided to get to the bottom of things. While waiting in a jail cell for three days, Bain endured unnecessary hardships, he believes because he was black, for crimes that he did not commit. He had false warrants, and the police did not believe that he was, in reality, of very high stature, and a well respected individual (Bain 1-8). Bryonn’s story is one of many cases of racial profiling. Just because he was black, the police officers didn’t believe that he was falsely accused.
