"The Stolen Party" by Liliana Heker and "The Circuit" by Francisco Jimenez both deals with a young child, during an impressionable time of life. Whether it's at an upper class party or in a stable home, both characters want to belong. These two stories have some similarities, but also some differences.
In the story "The Stolen Party", the main character, Rosaura, is a young girl of Latin decent, who is the "maid's daughter", as her Mom says. Rosaura is invited to, her friend, Luciana's birthday party, which she is very eager to attend. The party is "a rich people's party" as described by Rosaura's mother. Rosaura is somewhat poor or of lower class as depicted by the fact that she has only one nice dress and that is her "Christmas dress". She wants so badly to prove to herself and to her mother that she belongs at the party.
At the party, she actually did fit in and was actually treated special by Senora Inez, Luciana's mother. "Rosaura was the only one allowed into the kitchen", Heker writes, which made her feel special...
