Introduction:
This essay will critically analyze 2 different artists' sculptures from the 20th century. I have chosen two expressionist artists whose artworks were formed post world war one. They express the effects which war had on them personally and on society.
Description:
The first artist I have chosen is Raoul Hausmann, although better known for his painting and writing he did develop one sculpture. Raoul Hausmann was part of the Dada movement in Berlin post world war one, and his first sculpture was a representation of the ideas of the dada manifesto. Entitled "The spirit of the times" it was created in 1919in Germany. The sculpture is a mixed media assemblage and the style is expressionism, in that it is expressing the artist's opinion of society and the war, not expressing trauma and angst hidden inside him from the war. It is anti aesthetic and anti decorative but has a social purpose, aiming to uncover the eyes of society. It represents an abstract portrait of the middle class German man.
