The esteemed actor, writer, director, and producer Ossie Davis was selected to deliver the 2004 Charter Day speech because of his prestige and overwhelming accomplishments of awards and achievements received in his life.
As a professional, Ossie has earned the respect and attention from his peers and audience. Not needing an attention getter, Ossie introduced his speech by acknowledging and greeting the president of Howard University, H. Patrick Swygert, the esteemed Board of Trustee members, alumni, students, family and friends. Ossie continued by making a joke about him being the keynote speaker. Although the audience partook in this amusement, everyone, including Ossie, knew that his accomplishments exceed the criteria for being the keynote speaker.
Ossie Davis graduated form Howard University in 1939. As an alumnus, Ossie "credits Howard with making the difference in his life." He showed this accreditation through his thesis and body by acknowledging some major accomplishments and impacts that the Howard University and community have had on our past, present, and will continue to have on our future.
