Shadow of a Doubt
Although the film Shadow of a Doubt was released during the war, there have been arguments made that the characters and the setting in the film can be compared to past history, specifically World War II. The film can be compared to World War II for several reasons: the character development of Young Charlie from the young, nave girl that loved Uncle Charlie, but grew up to become a more mature, understanding girl similar to the development of the United States during the War. Another reason the film can be compared to the war is Uncle Charlie felt that the world was infected and was in need of reform, which is similar to Hitler's view of the world. The notion of crossing certain borders and invasion are also themes throughout this film. Specifically Uncle Charlie invaded the undisturbed town of Santa Rosa. Young Charlie's room could also be used as a border that was challenged throughout the film. Throughout the essay, a comparison will be made between the film Shadow of a Doubt and World War II.
The development of Young Charlie throughout the film can be closely compared to the development of the United States during the war. At the beginning of the film, young Charlie was a nave youthful girl that was oblivious to the clues that Uncle Charlie was displaying throughout the film. For example, when Uncle Charlie was walking off the train at the beginning of the film, he was pretending to use a cane, but then admitted to having good health...
