Gateway Inc is one of the five leading computer manufacturers in the United States of PC's, servers, workstations alone with other "out of the box" solutions and support. Among the top five, Compaq, Hewitt Packard, Dell, IBM; Gateway was second in manufacturing behind Dell in 2000.
The company has grown greatly in the last few years. According to Gateway in 1999 there was a retail store within a 30 minute drive of 75percent of the U. S. population. In 2000 this number increased to 85percent. However, even with an increase in stores in the first quarter of 1999 Gateway Inc. was operating at a loss.
