Background on the Red Planet
In 1938 Orson Welles and the Mercury Players performed a radio broadcast based on H.G. Wells's novel called War of the Worlds. The radio performance was presented in the format of a live news broadcast and the story was that Martians were invading the United States. The show was preceded by a brief notice that it was a fictitious broadcast, however because of the late ending of a competing radio program, many radio listeners on the East Coast tuned into the broadcast late. As a result, widespread panic ensued because many people believed the performance was a real news broadcast. People had heart attacks and committed suicide because they thought that Earth was being invaded by hostile intelligent life from Mars (MIssler, 1996, Pg. 3).
Our fascination with extraterrestrial life forms extends as far back as ancient man and up through modern day. Most science fiction writing is based on the idea that somewhere there is intelligent life in the universe other than mankind...
