The Pardoner Explained The true character of the Pardoner is explained in the Pardoner’s Prologue and reaffirmed by the tale that follows. The Pardoner possesses many sinful traits, but the worst of all is his greed. The Pardoner is a tale of three men that are out to avenge their friends death. The three men search high and low to find Death The three men, instead of seeking revenge for their friends death, kill each other for money out of greed. In the epilogue the Pardoner asserts his motto, “Radix malorum est cupiditas” (240), which means, “greed is the root of all evil, ” but the Pardoner contradicts himself many times. The Pardoner is a dishonest, hypocritical, cynical, greedy man, who is only concerned with material gains. The Pardoner is extremely hypocritical. He tells the other guest his motto, “greed is the root of all evil,” but almost simultaneously tells the other guests that his sermons have evil intent, “Believe me, many a sermon or devotive Exordium issues from an evil motive” (243).
