The farmer's calendar was based on the Nile. The year starts with plowing and sowing and the name for it is 'Going Out'. Next is 'Stem' and this happens around the 16th of March. This is when the crops are harvested. Inundation is next it starts around the 19th of July; this is called 'Pert'. The Egyptians were the first people to use agriculture for means of food. Large boulders were used to map out the farmer's area of land. The farmer's were sometimes tempted to move the stones to make their area bigger, but didn't because the government came around before planting and made sure that the boulders were in the right place. Dikes and canals were used to irrigate crops during the dry season and when the Nile was flooding they used these to run the water off the fields. The farmers grew and raised grain, flax, sheep, goats, pigs, pigeons, ducks, geese, beans, lentils, onions, garlic, lettuce, cucumbers, leeks, melons, grapes, pomegranates, dates, and figs...
