Since the beginnings of the twentieth century, communism has plagued the United States. Since the Russian Revolution and the emergence of communism in the Soviet Union, the United States has long feared communism. Communism is the complete opposite of all the ideas and morals that hold the United States together. The United States is governed on the principle that the people support the government, and that in turn the Government supports them. Communism is the complete opposite than that of democracy. The people of the United States work hard to support themselves. In a communistic government, every person is equally supported no matter how hard they work. The plans of communism sound great on paper, but the practice of communism is nearly impossible because of the selfishness and greed of human beings. Most communist governments that had been in effect up until this time period had fallen into the hands of a dictator. Since the communist takeover in Russia, the United States had greatly feared Communism. During the 1920’s the number of new union memberships declined rapidly. This was due largely to the rising fear of “Reds” and anarchists, who were mostly foreign born radical agitators.. It was feared by many that these new radical agitators were trying to promote upheaval in the United States. The 1920’s was a time when “right thinking men were scared out of their wits” as Walter Lippmann said. Immigrants were the most widely feared people during the 1920’s.
