Joseph Conrad portrays everything as opposites in the novel Heart of Darkness; it is all contrasting. The civilized are savage and the savages are civilized. Good is evil and evil is good. Heart of Darkness is the story of Marlow discovering the truth of society. He understands the reality behind the cultures. As a critic once said about the novel, "What is black is white, and what is white is black." This is seen from the 'cannibals' and the 'pilgrims', the Romans and Eldorado Exploring Exhibition, Kurtz and the native woman, and the accountant and manager. Every stereotype and prejudice is opposite the reality.
