The extract tells the part of where Laura wants to stop the garden party because of a workman that died down the road, that morning. Everyone else in the family thinks that this is a ridiculous idea. First Laura's sister shoots down the idea. Laura then decides to go and talk to her mother about the situation. Her mother also reacts the same way that Jose did. Laura can not understand why her mother does not agree with her. At the beginning of the story Laura was much exited about the party that is about to take place. She runs around doing errands and talks happily to everyone. She then learns about the man's death and thinks that the only appropriate thing to do is to stop the party. After her mother disagrees with her, she gives her a hat to try on...
