What is it?
Any of a group of psychotic disorders usually characterized by withdrawal from reality, illogical patterns of thinking, delusions, and hallucinations, and accompanied in varying degrees by other emotional, behavioral, or intellectual disturbances. Schizophrenia is associated with dopamine imbalances in the brain and defects of the frontal lobe and is caused by genetic, other biological and psychosocial factors.
Facts
Approximately 1 percent of people develop schizophrenia at some time during their lives.
Experts estimate that about 1.8 million people in the United States have schizophrenia.
The prevalence of schizophrenia is the same regardless of sex, race, and culture.
Women tend to experience the illness less severely than men.
It is NOT a "split personality."
People with it are NOT automatically violent criminals...
