Rebuilding Iraq
After the complete decimation of Iraq in the last year, Iraq has become economically, socially and politically crippled. It is very unlikely that a quick fix solution will be found to help Iraq recover. The country will have to be totally rebuilt from top to bottom, a task that requires not only the sustained political, economic, and military involvement of the U.S., but also the cooperation of other nations as well. In order to rebuild Iraq and have it become a nation that can survive on its own, several basics need to be addressed: a basic infrastructure, supplying food to people, stopping terrorism, and training the Iraqi Army.
Rebuilding Iraq will be a major undertaking, for example, the long process in Afghanistan and the Balkans. The key is going to be getting the institutions right so that a new Iraqi democracy and economy have the foundation to bring about real freedom and prosperity for its citizens. Key among those institutions will be a system of property rights and the rule of law to support them, and the creation of a system and culture of competition and free enterprise.
