A psychological disorder is a behavior that is atypical, disturbing, maladaptive, and unjustifiable. This is how psychologists define a person to be abnormal. Doctors used to believe that people were possessed by demons. Philippe Pinel thought that madness was an illness. He believed that talking to people and putting them into a humane environment was a way to treat this illness. Later doctors believed that psychological disorders were in fact illnesses. They believed they could diagnose, treat and cure these patients.
Researchers attribute the appearance of psychopathology to three causes: biological factors, psychological processes, and sociocultural contexts. None are more important than they other. They are all viewed with equal importance...
