In 1898, the destruction of the Spanish fleet in the harbor of Manila by the United States naval squadron commanded by Rear-Admiral Dewey and the surrender of the Spanish forces led to the establishment of Americas presence in the Philippines. The Treaty of Peace under which Philippines was ceded to America endorsed this presence.
However, the occupation which denied the Filipinos self-governance was met with resentment and sparked off an armed insurrection. Back in America, some Americans also felt that it was ludicrous that America, a democratic nation that believes in an individual's inalienable rights to freedom, are now fighting a war with the Philippines to forcibly deny them the freedom of self-government.
Nevertheless, the Benevolent Assimilation Proclamation by President William McKinley and Senators Albert J.Beveridges In Support of an America Empire rationalized the colonization of the Philippines as a mission to civilize and develop the backward Filipinos because of the racial, cultural, social, and religious superiority of the Americans. Without the Americans, Philippines would soon have anarchy and misrule worse than Spain's war. (James Rusling Paragraph 2, line 8-10) Beveridge and others believed that it would only be under American guidance and education, that these savage and uncivilized races and peoples would one day we ready for self government and the democratic rights and freedoms that Americans had. However, complication arises as teaching the Filipinos self government would mean that America would ultimately have to pull out from the Philippines...
