For this assignment regarding the Vietnam War, I chose to interview my father, whom was born in 1952. In 1968, he was 16 years old, and currently attending high school. In the beginning of the Vietnam War, he did not have much of a specific opinion about it, and other than knowing the war was going on, he did not pay much attention to it. As the war progressed he began to learn more about it, and eventually came to the more common opinion, which was shared by my grandparents (his parents), that there was no clear reason why the United Stated had gotten involved in the Vietnam War. America had set itself against all Communist activities; however, this was not a communist threat on America, it was more of a civil war. All the information necessary to form an opinion on the war was gathered from the media.
During this time, the media completely controlled the public opinion, this being the first time that color images and information regarding the war were able to be sent back immediately to the United States. By "controlled", it is meant that the people of the United Stated had never seen these images of war before, and whatever they saw, they believed. In the beginning, the media was very cautious, unsure of how the public would accept these events. As the public's opinion shifted against the war, so did the media's; however the media remained fair, showing what was going on in Vietnam with almost no bias...
