There is no doubt that there is a high rate of Latino immigration into the city of Los Angeles. The close proximity of Mexico to Los Angeles makes it a target for the Mexican immigrants. From 1990 to 2000, the population of Latinos in Los Angeles increased from 39% to 47%. New residents are slowly converting Los Angeles' Black ghettos into ghettos of their own. This growing Latino population has principally attributed to the influx of legal and illegal Mexican immigrants driven by a desire for opportunity.
The major concentration of the Latino and Hispanic is located in central Los Angeles. The distribution resembles Burgess's description of the concentric model of a city. The Latino concentration decreases as the distance from central Los Angeles increases. Central Los Angeles is known to be the location of where the poor live.
