Patients Rights and Responsibilities
Patients have many rights and responsibilities that they are possibly unaware of.
These and responsibilities come on many different levels, from your hospital rights, that
you have to do for your doctors, and what you should or should not do during and after
your in a doctors care.
In the meeting we had last Wednesday night we discussed a couple of different
situations and what could and should be done in each of them. We also got to meet
several men and woman from different fields who talk about what they could do to help
you and what they would do to help each of our example cases.
First we met Jane, who has been smoking for 20 years and has just found out she
is pregnant. Jane wants to keep her baby, but says she can't make herself stop
smoking because the pain of withdrawals are just to much for her. Each of the panel
members took turns saying what they thought and what should be done, but to cut it
back I am just going to say some of the things that interested me the most. I found out
that Jane must be very well educated on the risk that she is taking by smoking while
pregnant. It is the doctors responsibility to tell her all of the possibilities that might come
out of this. If not Jane has the right to sue, but only if she has not been told of the
consequences of her actions...
