Historically, people of high court have been seen as objects to behold. They spent a great deal of time and energy on looking good, especially to impress others. They were fragile and did not do anything that would exert them. The women of the time had to work hard to preserve their virtue and chastity. Should these women not remain chaste, they would have trouble finding a husband. In fact, one of their main concerns was finding a husband and marrying into a higher class. The men of the time had to work hard to impress the ladies and protect their honor. Pope's poem The Rape of the Lock is a poem based on an actual occurrence, and thus the main characters of the poem are based on an actual people, as well the events are based on reality. The poem portrays society quite realistically and in an interesting way. Pope is mocking high society in this poem, and is pointing out all the foibles of the people within high society...
