What are transgenics? A transgenic is an organism that has integrated foreign DNA (from the same or different species) into its genome through recombinant DNA techniques (Palmiter and Brinster, 1985). Genes are made up of DNA that stores the information that regulates how organisms form and function. Altering the genes that make up an organism (their genome) allows scientists to manipulate genetic factors that are speculated in the etiology (cause) of human diseases. Therefore, by introducing or in-activating particular genes, scientist can locate the root causes of diseases associated with gene defects (i.e. Alzheimer’s disease). Once the genes are targeted, scientists can then discover possible preventions and treatments for these diseases at the genetic level by influencing the expression of the gene defects.
