Awakening to Walmart's Purchasing Tactics
In 1992, I had never heard of Wal-Mart and therefore never imagined what short-term or long-term economical impacts it could or would make on the United States economy. According to Steve Lohr, "Discount Nation: Is Wal-Mart Good for America?", "Wal-Mart is the largest American Corporation in terms of sales, $245 billion last year alone. It is the nation's largest grocer, toy seller, and furniture retailer. More than 30% of disposable diapers purchased in the country are sold in Wal-Mart stores, as are 30% of hair care products, 26% of toothpaste and 20% of pet food. Wal-Mart has nearly 3,000 stores in the United States, and plans to add an additional 1,000 over the next five years. Increasingly, the company is taking its formula abroad; Wal-Mart is now the largest private employer in Mexico". The following information will define the terms monopsony, price taker, and price maker, it will also demonstrate how these terms apply to Wal-Mart's procurement practices, and evaluate the ethics and legality of these practices.
