The novel "The Last of the Mohicans" was authored by James Fenimore Cooper. The story is set in the heavily wooded region of western New York. The time period is July to mid-august 1757, which at that time western New York was the frontier. The region the tale takes place in is inhabited by brilliant wildlife, as well as many Indians. Cooper describes the surroundings being covered with "darkened woods" (cooper 1) and streams with rapids. The local natives are seen as "practiced native warriors" (cooper 1) to the English frontiersman. In this particular time frame the French and Indian War was also very present in that same region.
The French army is attacking the British fort William Henry, which is under the command of Colonel Munro. Munro's daughters are on their way to visit him, being led by Major Duncan Heyward and an Indian scout named Magua. On route the party of travelers cross paths with a white Indian scout Natty Bumppo, who goes by his Indian name Hawkeye, and he was accompanied by two Mohican friends Chingachgook and Uncas, Chingachgook's son, the only surviving members of the once great Mohican tribe...
