Question: "Population movements have been some of the most significant events of the 20th Century".
Population movements have been some of the most significant events of the 20th Century. The most important involving voluntary, forced, international, and internal migration. The term "migration" means the process of shifting from one place to another intending to stay in that same area permanently or for a long period of time. Some of the features of population movements are globalisation of migration, increasing the volume of migration in all areas, a greater diversity in the type of migration, more women in all types of migration and new movements linked with both economic and social change in newly industrialised countries.
Voluntary migration occurs when people decide to move because they want to improve their well-being, both economic and social, as well as gaining personal freedom.
On the other hand, forced migration is when people are made to move as a result of circumstances they cannot control, such as natural disasters and war. These migrants are more commonly known as refugees or displaced persons. The official definition of a refugee is cannot return to their country of origin because of a fear of persecution based on their race, religion, nationality or political views. However, this definition does not include the millions of people who have lost their livelihood due to drought, starvation, land degradation, natural disasters, poverty and political conflict...
