I selected to do my analysis on Georges Seurat's Oil on Canvas, 1887-1888, The Models. This painting is owned by The Barnes Foundation and found in Merion, Pennsylvania. The Models is one of the many pieces to be done by Seurat in a neo-impressionism style, which is the outgrowth and reaction to impressionism. What really makes this painting and Seurat so well known is his style of using pointillism instead of using expressive brush strokes.
Seurat believed in using a scientific approach to composition and color to create his artwork. Part of this scientific approach was to use optical blending rather than physical blending to create the colors that he wanted. The closer one gets to this painting he or she will see more primary colors, but the further away he or she stands from the painting, the colors will blend together to make a certain color that Seurat was striving for.
One can tell by the subject matter that this painting is form of representation known as realism. I perceive this painting as though it is a continuous narrative. As you can see, the model toward the left side of the painting is sitting about to take off her robe...
