In the story Blue Winds Dancing by Tom Whitecloud, a young Native American man, away from his family attending college in a white man's world, finds himself conflicted. He questions which culture he should call his own: his familiar Indian one or his new white one. The young man feels a desire to join both societies, but does not know if he belongs to either one. He is unsure where to go and doubts himself as a result. "Afraid of what my father will say. Afraid of being looked on as a stranger by my own people. I sit by a fire and think about myself and all other young Indians. We just don't seem to fit in anywhere-certainly not among whites and not among the older people" (123).
Believing he must choose between the two cultures, he travels home in search for answers to his questions. On the journey he reflects on the blue winds dancing, "Home, and peace, and the beat of drums, and blue winds dancing over snowfields...
