Banker J. Piermont Morgan was the most powerful businessman in the United States a
century ago. Business people around the world trusted him with their money, as he continued to
rescue the United States from bankruptcy. He did not operate only to make money for himself,
but brought the idea of prosperity for all and created a stable economic system. The work he did
was not understood by many, but his quick access to information and good moral sense made him
the informal central banker of the US for the critical years of the industrial revolution.
On April 17, John Piermont Morgan, son of Junius and Juliet Morgan, was born in
Hartford, Connecticut. As a kid, John was temperamental and he suffered with all sorts of
maladies. He had three sisters and his younger brother died young at age twelve. John was
constantly lectured by his father that nothing was more important to a businessman than his
reputation. Growing up, John attended nine schools, mostly boarding schools, where he spent his
free time trying to look at girls at neighboring schools...
