The stories from The Stolen Children all depict the loneliness, and heartache of the stolen generation. Each Child or mother or father that has suffered at the hand of the policies of the Australian government has this is common. Generations of families have been disrupted and separated from their culture, land family, robbing them of identity. In each story there is pain and suffering but a notable lack of anger, a testament to the Aboriginal People.
After reading through the stories of removal and detention of Aboriginal children, as young as a few months old, the reader can get a sense of the suffering the stolen generation went through, and still continue to suffer today. Accounts from children held in hostels run by the church or fostered out into families often resulted in rape and physical and mental abuse.
This can create an acute sense of shame to be a white Australian. However it is not up to the individuals to feel personal guilt if they were not involved. That would most certainly be a backwards step for reconciliation. There must be a sense of national guilt, atrocities were committed by the Australian federal government in the attempted genocide by assimilation of the aboriginal people...
