Spanish Cinema has always been overshadowed by Hollywood but this is beginning to change as there are many new and exciting Spanish directors such as Alejandro Amenabar and Pedro Almodóvar gaining critical acclaim both in Spain and abroad. Directors such as Pedro Almodóvar are now exploring new avenues of Spanish Cinema bringing Spanish cinema to the forefront, before the 1980’s Spanish cinema was largely unknown or ignored in the English speaking world but now this is beginning to change with the success of Almodóvar in the United States and across Europe. ... Because of his new way of filmmaking he seems to grab peoples attention and thus has become an extremely successful film director and an important figure in Spanish cinema. ... It was during this period of Hollywood cinema that Almodóvar became very much fascinated with and later provided the director with the key for the formation of the important phases in his works. ... Andy Warhol was an American painter, film director and a producer and was one of the leaders of the pop art movement, which was extremely popular during the 1950,s and the 1960’s. ... These ideas and movies greatly appealed to Pedro Almodóvar, as did the works of John Waters who is also an American film director who made quite shocking films that contain quite a bit of violence and unusual plots. ...
As I mentioned in my first chapter, when Pedro Almodóvar first began to make his movies it was a time that the Franco Regime was ending in Spain. ... An auteur is a filmmaker who has a personal style and keeps creative control over his works; it is the director’s vision and creativity. The Auteur theory ‘compares the film director to the author of a book. It attributes artistic control to the director. He has been described as been Spain’s most outrageous film director of recent times. ...
In order to understand the works of Pedro Almodóvar there are at least four phases in his film life. ... A time when Almodóvar was starting out as a movie director, with very little knowledge of the technicalities of movie making but with many great ideas. ...
As I mentioned earlier Pedro Almodóvar was very influenced by the Hollywood classics, popular culture, the kitsch, Andy Warhol and John Waters.
