Pedro Almodvar is one of the most renowned directors to come out of Spain since the fall of Franco. He has been compared to many of the great directors of the twentieth century and is one of the only Spanish directors that has achieved the most success and popularity outside of his own country, he is not only hugely popular within his own native Spain but also with many other foreign audiences all over Europe and as far away as the United States of America.
He is best known internationally for winning Oscars under the categories of best foreign Film in 1988 for 'Mujeres al Borde de un Ataque de Nervios' ('Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown') and also in the year 2000 for 'Todo sobre mi Madre ('All about my Mother') which he both wrote and directed. In 2003 Almodovars film 'Hable con Ella' ('Talk to Her') earned him the Academy's best original screenplay award and a nomination for best director. 'Hable con Ella' was not nominated for 'Best Foreign Film' which not only surprised Almodvar himself but also the Film world. The reason that this film did not feature in the best foreign film category was not that the film was considered to be good enough but because it did not qualify. With the Oscars each foreign country is allowed to put forward just one foreign language film for that category and on this particular year, Spain decided to put forward Fernando Leon's 'Los Lunes al sol' ('Mondays in the Sun',) that failed to be nominated. It is believed that if Spain had had put 'Hable con Ella' forward instead that it would have more than likely been a third nomination for Almodovar and probably have won him yet another Oscar.
Pedro Almodvar has come along way since the days he used to make short films with his Super 8 camera. He is now extremely popular and has gained huge respect in the film world...
