A Lesson Before Dying, written by Ernest J. Gaines, is a novel covering a period when blacks were still treated unjustly by society and mostly the white man. Jefferson, one of the main characters, is mistakenly blamed of a violent crime and waits for his execution in confinement. Grant, the novels key hero must find it inside himself to assist Jefferson in seeing that he is a man, allowing him to walk bravely to his demise at the execution chair. In this novel, a teacher finds his own soul mistakenly, by trying to help out someone else. In the first scene of the novel, Jefferson rests in a courtroom in Louisiana, which is overflowing with fury, anxiety, and silence from the others in the room.
