The notion of good makes sense only in a world that is inhabited by intelligent beings that are capable of pleasures and pains. If we were to some home how exterminated all of life on earth and assuming the rest of the universe to be devoid of any life then there would be nothing good or bad or right or wrong. In such a world whatever is, is. At this point we can also differentiate between intrinsic good and instrumental good. Intrinsic good is something that is good not because of something else that is produces but for its own sake. Instrumental good is something that brings about some other good. According to Spinoza good and evil, these terms indicate nothing positive in things considered in themselves, nor are they anything else than modes of thought. One and the same thing at various times be good and evil or even indifferent. Music for example may be good to a melancholy person and bad for a person in mourning and at the same time a deaf person may be indifferent to it.
