Edgar Allen Poe
Edgar Allen Poe was a gifted writer. What made him so gifted was the way he used sensory images, foreshadowing, irony and. The way he blended all of these literary elements together to create the idea of horror is pure genius.
Poe often used sensory images to describe the scenes in his stories. This often comes to a horrific affect. One example of this was in "The Fall of the House of usher" "I came at lastin sight of the house of Usherthe bleak walls, the vacant eye windows, upon a few rank sedges and the white trunks of dead trees-I felt a sinking of the heart at the brink of the lake that lay dark and still by the walls of the dwelling. Looking down, I saw the same scene thrown back by the still, black water"this excerpt from the beginning of the story is a perfect example of the feelings that Poe generates with his use of sensory images. It slowly but vividly paints a picture of a the mansion frozen in time but seemingly crumbling at the same time
Another thing that Poe was gifted at was the use of foreshadowing. At this he was especially good. Poe is very subtle when he uses foreshadowing, like in "The Cask of Amontillado" when Montressur agreed that a cough wouldn't kill Fortunato, this could mean that Montessori new how Fortunato would die...
