Many plays and novels use contrasting places (for example, two countries, two cities or towns, two houses, or the land and the sea) to represent opposed forces or ideas that are central to the meaning of the work. Choose a novel or play that contrasts two such places. Write an essay explaining how the places differ, what each place represents, and how their contrasts contribute to the meaning of the work.
The contrasting of opposing places in The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, pertains to the east and west sides of Long Island. Dubbed as East Egg and West Egg, these places differ greatly in the people who dwell in them and the structures built in them. Their differences bring a lasting effect on the book and widen it's meaning.
The people who inhabit the two cities, when compared, seem to have immense differences. Carraway's home, in Long Island's West Egg, appears as, "less fashionable of the two" (Fitzgerald 9)...
