The advent of White-Collar crime in today's society is becoming widespread and seemingly getting out of control. Citizens no longer trust the so-called big cooperation's with their savings and investments. The phrase "White-Collar Crime" was coined in 1939 throughout a speech given to the American Sociological Society by Edwin Sutherland. Sutherland defined the term as "crime committed by a person of respectability and high social status in the course of his occupation. " Although there has been some debate as to what qualifies as a white-collar crime, the term today generally encompasses a variety of nonviolent crimes usually committed in commercial situations for financial gain.
The idea behind "white-collar" crime and what it is can be quite confusing. "White-collar" crime is largely understandable in terms of routine activities and crime opportunities. It is difficult to determine who falls under the title of a "white-collar" criminal. Typically, they are found in various professional, corporate, and government settings.
