Of all the sensory preceptors that are in the human body the eye has the most of them. It accounts for more than two-thirds of all the receptors. Seeing as their high importance is not surprising to see all the attention that disorders and diseases of the eye get. The problems range from nearsightedness to total blindness. Millions of people each year deal with these problems. In some cases, some of the cones that are required for responding to red, green and blue lights are not fully developed in an individual. The rare individuals who develop only one of these three types are totally color blind. They can only see the world in shades of gray. Astigmatism results from corneas with an uneven curvature; they cannot bend incoming light rays to the same point. Nearsightedness or myopia often occurs when the horizontal axis of the eyeball is longer than the vertical axis. Farsightedness or hyperopia is just the complete opposite of myopia. The vertical axis of the eyeball is longer than the horizontal. It is often called a “lazy eye”. The eyes are very much vulnerable to infections and diseases.
