On June 18, 1999 the groundbreaking ceremony for Pittsburgh's newest stadium took place. Heinz Field, one of the finest stadiums to be built, would be the new home for the Steelers as well as the University of Pittsburgh Panthers. With 65,000 seats and a gorgeous open view of the waterfront, Heinz Field has been an exciting new addition to the Pittsburgh community. After two years of construction the stadium opened on Saturday August 26, 2001 for an exhibition game against the Detroit Lions. Those two years were filled with many exciting developments necessary in order for the stadium to open on schedule.
One of the goals of this stadium was for the design to be distinctive to the city of Pittsburgh, which included an open end at the south end zone accented by two towers. A plaza area was also included to give fans spectacular views of downtown and the Point. The towers were themed to represent the industrial heritage of Pittsburgh.
