Introduction
The aim of this assignment is to review the book ' Interpreting Our Heritage' by Freeman Tilden (Third Edition, 1977). The review will identify (in broad terms) the main ideas and best features of the book. Tilden's fourth principle of interpretation "The chief aim of Interpretation is not instruction, but provocation"-, will be discussed in more depth, this will include two examples from the writer's own experiences and observations as a provider of interpretation. Then conclude with the personal opinions of the book by the writer.

Freeman Tilden has divided the book into two separate parts. Part One specifically discusses Freeman Tilden's 'Six Principles ' for interpretation. In Part Two, Tilden discusses a number of different interpretive mediums that he has observed throughout his research for the book. He relates each of these mediums to a setting or theme and what it is, he perceives, should be the aim of the interpretive effort, for example in Chapter 11 'The Mystery of Beauty', he argues that the manager of a park should not attempt to describe that, which is to be comprehended by feeling. To interpret a small part of this thing of beauty may distract the visitor from comprehending the 'whole' thing of beauty.
