The Collier’s Encyclopedia defines schizophrenia as the name applied to a group of mental diseases which are characterized fundamentally by severe disturbances in the thinking, feeling and emotional contact of the individual with the outside world. The person’s interests are withdrawn from outside objects and turned inward. There behavior becomes disrupted and unintelligible and there is loss of harmony between thought process and emotional reactions (Collier’s Encyclopedia). There are many myths, legends’ even saying what schizophrenia is and is not, but it is a disease that can affect anyone at any time. There is treatment available but there is a higher chance of a full recovery if the early warning signs are picked up on and treatment is given at an early stage in the schizophrenia. Doctors don’t as yet know the exact cause for schizophrenia but they do know it is a server brain disease (Phillip W Wong MD 26-2-2004, William J Macphee 2002, Mayo Clinic staff 3-2004) Schizophrenia is a biologically based brain disease. The most recent advances in brain imaging have confirmed imbalances of two brain chemicals – dopamine and serotonin – in those who suffer from schizophrenia.
