Choosing a single most important event of American history in the period before 1860 is very difficult, and requires much thought on the subject. There are many important events that happened during that period. However, if there is a common belief that one event can trigger a chain reaction of events, it can be argued that the printing and distribution of Thomas Paine?s Common Sense, could be the single most important event in American history.
On January 16, 1776 Thomas Paine?s Common Sense was first published and began to circulate in the American colonies. This document was read by many American colonists, and infused the idea of revolution into the heads of many of the colonists. The document also stirred up the idea of revolution within groups of people that were already instilled with this idea.
