Grateful Dead and political means

The Grateful Dead did not create and produce their music for any political means. They did however create a culture that comprised of those who chose not to involve themselves with mainstream American culture. Instead of acting against political injustices, whether by protesting or marching they simply marched to the beat of their own drum. The beat was followed by a culture of fans called the Deadheads. The beat they followed was to the tune of Jerry Garcia and the lyrics of Robert Hunter. Hunter wrote songs that were not motivated by politics or the radical movements of the times. The music created and performed by the Dead created a lifestlye that was followed by people numbering in the thousands over a thirty year period. The music was in itself a statement.
