"When Volunteerism Isn't Noble"
Even though it is mandatory in many high schools across the country, volunteerism should not be a requirement for high school graduation. I, as all the other students in my school, were required to do 60 hours of community service, or we would not be able to graduate. My Academic Decathlon team, in particular, was assigned to volunteer at Dallas Museum of Art to teach elementary school students about importance of art works. On the way to our destination we were given a form which was to be filled out after each of us performed a certain number of hours. My friend Dimple Patel and I were assigned to lead a group of 15 elementary school students and show them around the museum. However, many others, as we found out later in the year, sneaked out and went to eat at McDonalds. Due to the absence of high school students, keeping the elementary students form touching and knocking off the paintings was very frustrating for my friend and she could not take it any more. "Why do they make us do such work," she said, "when they don't pay us?" I did not know what to tell her except "We have to, its mandatory." At the end of the day, we reported to the front desk to get our hours approved...
