In Zen and The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance Pirsig does not give the concrete definition of Quality in the text. It was defined as an "exploration which he saw as a route through the mountains of the spirit (ZMM 168)." Also Quality was put into two distinct phases and how his metaphysical phase was a disaster. Phaedrus had lost everything that was tangible to him leaving him with nothing. But he thought that he would use his route across the mountains to satisfy him, but he lost that. He refused to define what Quality is so that is why it was so hard to decipher what it was. The reason for his reluctance to explain what Quality is because it can be different for every individual. So asking him what it is would be just asking him his opinion on Quality. "The term worth is a Quality term. Life would just be living without any values or purpose at all (ZMM 194)...
